Tour The Quail's Nest

Click to check room availabilityThe Quail’s Nest is a circa 1835 house converted to a bed and breakfast in the early 1970s. It is located in the quaint village of Danby (population 1,000), nestled in The Green Mountains, minutes away from the Appalachian and Long Trails [click here for more activities]. We are just off scenic Route 7 and convenient to the shops and restaurants of Manchester, Robert Todd Lincoln’s Hildene Estate, Bromely Mountain, and Stratton Mountain. Sleigh rides and horse back riding are available in Danby and nearby Danby Four Corners (which has only three corners if you’re counting).

Click for tour of Grandma's Attic Grandma's Attic is a second floor room located on the south side of the house. It has a private bath with a standup shower. In addition to the king-sized bed with a brass headboard, there is a small desk. There is one window and dormer ceiling. There are two small closets set in a wall to provide plenty of hanging space along with a dresser. A rocker and side chair complement the desk chair. The floor is a dark wood.

The Edward Hopper Room is named for the Hopper prints hanging in the room, including "Nighthawks" and "New York Movie." The second floor room has a private bath with a standup shower and faces the front/west side of the house. Hopper has a full ceiling and a delightful king-sized sleigh bed. An armoire and dresser provide plenty of storage. The room has two windows and a third in the bath. The room also has a stuffed rocking chair. The wood floor has been refinished and contains the original wide, natural pine boards.

Picket Fences has a king-sized bed plus a twin bed located on the north side with a dormer celing. Two small closets set in the wall and a dresser provide storage. It has a private bath with standup shower. There is one window in the room with two smaller ones in the bath. The room also has a rocking chair. The rate is $20 additional for a third person. The floor has been refinished and the wide natural pine floorboards are part of the original constuction.

Mum's Room is a larger room with a king-sized four-poster bed and a small sitting area located at the back or east side of the house. The private bath includes a tub/shower combination and two sinks with a small window for lighting. An antique dresser provides drawer storage and there is a niche for hanging clothes. The ceiling is standard. The floor is refinished wide natural pine floorboards.

Library is brightly lit with four windows on the first floor and serves as a quiet area with a diverse selection of books for guests to enjoy along with wi-fi access for your own laptop.

The Common Area is located on the first floor and contains a dining room where breakfast will be served and a living room with a classic wood fireplace. This is a dedicated guest area, but you can always contact us with the wall buzzer by our door off the dining room. There is a television with cable channels and a selection of VHS/DVD movie selections. There is plenty of light from many windows and the back door which leads to the guest deck where you will find seating facing the Green Mountains. The refinished wide natural pine floor is truly the centerpiece of the Common Area. Don't forget to look for the Harry Truman letter hanging on the wall of the dining room. You will also find the guest phone in the hallway under the stair case; hot water for beverages 24 hours a day; a small refrigerator with water and guest storage on a space available basis; and Terry usually has baked treats for all guests on the dining room table.

In the dining room is a basket with menus from local and Manchester restaurants. We would be glad to make recommendations and call ahead for availability and reservations.

In case you get interested in a good read, we do sell copies of two books: "Ghosts of the Northeast" by a regional author named Pitkin which includes the story of a haunted house here in Danby; another is "Alienation of Affection" authored by Chris' brother Robert Hardaway about a scandalous murder trial in Denver after the turn of the 20th century. Also available for purchase are USGS topographic maps of the southern Green Mountains and a map of the covered bridges in Vermont.
